Missy owns the cupcake shop, is single and has no family other than her beloved dog. When a competitor is found dead, poisoned, she becomes a suspect. But it seems she has a stalker of her own. Cute, cozy mystery.

This is the first installment in the Frosted Love Cozy Mystery series. Melissa "Missy" Gladstone is the owner of Missy's Cupcakes and More located in a small town in Louisiana.

Missy is surprised when Detective Charles "Chas" Beckett appears in the doorway to her kitchen looking to question her and her assistant Ben Radigan regarding the death of baking competitor Daryl "The Donut Man" Davis. Daryl had stolen one of Missy's prized cupcake recipes, entered into a National Competition and won enough money to expand and advertise his doughnut business, leaving Missy furious but unwilling to pursue legal action.

I was enjoying (sort of) this very short but quick, easy read until the detailed description of a beloved pets death. There was more description regarding this event than there was about the characters in the book. There was absolutely NO reason to include this tragedy as this animal did not feature in the book nor have any bearing on the murder.

It was a little difficult to understand how Missy manages to run a successful bakery when she is either getting up after daylight, closing for the day or running around town nosing into other peoples business. There is no interaction between Missy and any of the bakery clientele so you don't meet any of the townspeople, Missy has no family and apparently no friends other than assistant Ben so there are no relationships to become interested in, you are introduced to a couple of characters who may be suspects but really there are only very brief conversations with them.

Like every cozy mystery there is the required romantic tension between Missy and Chas, there is the faithful family pet and a not too grisly murder. I feel like the author was rushed to get this book into publication and left a few loose ends.

I received a free copy of this book through Amazon.com along with the next in the series A Pinch of Murder. I will give the next a try and hope that this one was just a case of the author starting to develop her heroine.
