This is a hard boiled story about a PI hired to find the men responsible for killing his client's son. He travels down south with his secretary as his "accomplice". She is there to make him more believable since he's a Northerner. The book takes place in the 60's when race relations were not at their best in the deep south. I found this aspect of the book the most interesting. The main character is set on finishing the job. At the end of the book, the first thing that came to my mind is, be careful what you wish for, especially if it comes at the cost of everything else.
