I've been struggling to remember the name and author of a book I read some years ago.  It's set in the far future on Earth, where different societies have sprung up, living on technology of the past.  In the society this book focuses on, everyone changes genders each year until they are adults, at which point they settle into male or female (althoug a shunned few end up as "neuter").   If I'm remembering correctly, the author had several books set in this universe, but only one in this society.
