A fascinating book which filled a large hole in my knowledge of military history. If you read any book about Napoleon, it is sure to mention his Egyptian campaign, but not much beyond that. This book fills in all the details, giving you many reasons to admire and detest the man.
It also spends time relating how this military expedition reawakened interest in Egyptian history, much of which had been forgotten. The results changed the way early 19th century Europe, and much of the rest of the world, viewed history, religion and science.
At times, I felt myself siding with Napoleon, hoping he would succeed in this great effort, even though I knew his success would greatly change the world I live in, perhaps not for the better.
