British SF is a weakness of mine, and Justina Robson's work comes under that heading.
The summary is that a STL extra-solar explorer, Voyager Isol, stumbles onto something unique - something that allows her to travel FTL and find a world for her people, the Forged (genetically and cybernetically modified humans).

And this gift horse needs to be looked in the mouth.

The gift touches off a political frenzy in the Gaiasol system and among the Forged. And one archeologist is sent to the world that Isol found.

This is a complex story, with a lot of different aspects and viewpoint characters. The ending fits with what comes up and seems appropriate, but it feels, well, deflated.
