Brandon Nicholas Lewis (born December 12, 1979) is an American author best known for his poetic style and short stories dealing with Southern gothic and grotesque. He frequently uses elements of feminism, ethnicity, religious philosophy, and horror mixed with light comedy. His first novel In The Wind was published in October 2007, which preceded the publishing of his second book, Mayhem, America, an anthology of short stories and poems.
Nicholas Lewis was raised in Portageville, Missouri. Shortly after graduating high school, Nicholas decided to forego his scholarships to various universities, and concentrated on finding a vocation that would give him "life experiences." What seemingly started as a fluke, resulted in him working as a waiter at Casino Aztar in Caruthersville, MO.
After quickly becoming acquainted with the glamour of the bright lights, famous artists, and non-stop partying, Lewis decided to start keeping a journal of his experiences. Little did he know that this would later lead to a profession of writing, as well as teaching. Having an epiphany one night while staring at the lights outside the window of the presidential suite of Horseshoe Casino in Robinsonville, MS, he made the decision to take what little money he had left and enroll in college at Southeast Missouri State University.
Though leaving the casino, Lewis never left the service industry, working at such places as Ruby Tuesday, Outback Steakhouse, and other privately-owned establishments. Waiting tables and bartending afforded him the opportunity to study the lives of people as well as gave him the time to write and study literature.
After graduating with a Bachelor's degree in English literature, Lewis pursued a graduate degree at Southeast Missouri State University as well.
Nicholas Lewis' first novel was inspired by the insecurities he felt of being adopted into a large family. Though he chose to tell the story through the life of an African-American girl adopted into a "white" family, there were similarities between his life and hers.
Lewis' newest book, Mayhem, America, release in December 2008, is a collection of short stories and poems. The Haunted Woods, set to come out in 2010, is based on the life and stories of Nathaniel Hawthorne.
