This book was definitely a page turner for me. While it does have some very graphic sexual and violent parts to it, I felt it also spoke to depression and abandonment.
The book also addresses children who grow up in institutions waiting to be adopted and feeling unheard by the child welfare system.

Apparently some very authentic sadomasochism in this book.

London in the early 1980s. Thirty-something Rachel is a single mother, a part time educator working with "problem" students, a commitment-phobe, a survivor of a traumatic childhood, and a sufferer from recurrent depression. She is also a remarkably self-possessed narrator, intelligent, observant and mordantly funny as she recounts events (including a sadomasochistic sexual relationship) that test the limits of her mental and physical endurance, plunge her to the depths of despair, and force her to take drastic action in order to achieve catharsis and closure of sorts. A brutally honest trip into female psyche.

a great book, one of my favorite fiction novels. The above review says it all. Rachel's narrative of her "interesting" life pulls you in, a real page turner. I liked it enough to read it twice. Highly recommended.

This book was nothing like I thought it would be. Nice twist to the ending. Kind of makes you think of the dark nature of humans in general.

In short : an sadomasochistic tale.Depressed mom enters into a sex thing' with a domineering guy, after subjecting herself to degradation, she starts reaching the conclusion that this person may be the rapist the law is searching for.
I know this book received a lot of negativity, and bad reviews, but I count it among my favorites.
If the sadomasochistic sex is not offensive, it is an interesting novel
