The Oath of Nerull is the third novel in the 2002 series introducing archetypical "iconic" 3.0 Dungeons & Dragons characters in literary terms. These novels were apparently designed to support the 3.0 launch by inserting players handbook characters into actions and/or quests that D&D fans could both understand and enjoy.

I found the third novel to be an enjoyable and interesting read. The three iconic characters in this book are: Ember the human Monk, Hennet the human Sorcerer, and Nebin the gnome Illusionist. I think these characters were well presented and "true" to form with motivations and reactions that seem appropriate for who they are. Nebin and Hennett are friendly rivals out to make names for themselves by winning a magic competition versus many other hopeful magic users. The contest itself is very interesting with colorful opponents that test the two in different ways.

Ember is a gifted and serious monk. She is also the last survivor of an attack on her order in an outlying town of middling size. She is travelling to her order's home base to warn them of what happened when she meets the two other characters. They end up helping each other through several exciting adventures and become close in the process. I think this was probably the best book of the first three and I recommend it to anyone who has an interest in D&D and fantasy in general. For those of you who have read my other reviews, you know that I am not afraid to call out weaknesses and/or failures (as I see them) but this book has very little to none.

The main antagonist and the adventures the three companions take part in is interesting and exciting, I could see the group having a legitimate chance at overcoming the obstacles they must in order to succeed. That sort of realism is very important to me since I find myself losing interest in a book that has too many "lucky" breaks or unbelievable twists. Try this book if you are on the fence, you will probably like it.

Finally, a total of ten books were written for this series by various staff writers in the WOTC stable. All ten used the psuedo-name "T.H. Lain" to grant continuity between the books. Each adventure looks like it features different iconic characters and as I read them I will post reviews for all, along with which characters were present. My hope is that the story line is pulled from one book to another but that is never a sure thing with multiple authors. After three books it so far appears that one story line and set of characters have nothing to do with the others. Later books have reoccuring characters though, so perhaps there is still threads to be tied.

If you like this review please give me a thumbs up, it would be nice to know it was helpful to someone! Also, check out my other reviews for this series (as I get them read) and others I have done previously. Thanks!
