My husband isn't really a fiction reader but he told me a very touching story that involved him reading (and liking) the book The Old Man and the Sea by Hemingway as a child. It had to do with a terrible teacher who would give him a hard time about book reports (because he was never interested in the books) until his father took a copy of this book out of his desk and told him to try it (even though it was a much higher level than his grade level). He read and loved the book and did his book report on it and the teacher was impressed. Someday, when we have extra money to blow (when the economy gets better) I would love to buy him a signed first edition for his birthday or Christmas but for now... I would like a lovely copy for him. I think it's hard for him around the holidays, since both of his parents are dead and his only brother lives across the country with their kids now. I'm trying to make things special for him, even on our tight budget.
If anyone has a nice copy of this book, I would love to order it from you to give him on Christmas morning.
Thanks so much! :)
