I love a good mystery story, one that is well-told, that leaves me guessing, gasping for breath, and feeling satisfied for having read it! Please know, everyone,Ruth Rendell/Barbara Vine is just the author of such genre that you want! This is one of her first books, and I just loved it! Sorry it had to end, but what an ending it was! Ya gotta read it! DAS inCNy

I enjoyed every minute of this book!

Stanley is not a happy man: His mother-in-law Maud lives with him and his wife Vera. Not only does she constantly bicker with Stanley, and interrupts his favorite pastime of solving cross-word puzzles, but she also wants Vera to leave her good-for-nothing low-life husband. Neither Stanley nor Maud lift a finger at home. Vera is caught between the two and wears herself out trying to please them both. Oh, and Maud is rich! But because she hates Stanley, her money goes only to Vera, not to Vera and Stanley!

To finally persuade Vera to leave Stanley and live the good life with her, Maud baits the hook by telling Vera just how much she is worth. Vera tells Stanley. When he realizes that Maud is starting to tighten the thumbscrews on him, Stanley tries to figure out a way to get rid of Maud. Things come to a head when Maud calls in reinforcements in the form of her dear old friend Ethel who will stay with them just for a few days, and who - shortly after her arrival - drops dead in front of Stanley, while Maud is asleep upstairs. Has fortune smiled on Stanley?
