I was disappointed in a few ways. First, it is pretty predictable except for the totally unnecessary random people and events. Second, SO much of this story could have been left out and it would have made it stronger, and lastly, I found the writing relatively boring with only occasional interesting "turns of the phrase." Overall, I stuck it out hoping for a remarkable ending and was disappointed again...
I DID, however, enjoy revisiting the 70's and getting some insight into the mindset of the southern folks during that era. The author added enough unique details to his characters to make them "live", but again, he added more characters than I thought the story needed.
The title implied that the protagonist was waiting for something... counting, like in hide and seek. I suppose he was, but I would have liked to see One Mississippi mentioned more than once during the whole book.
Somebody else might LOVE this - it did get great reviews!
