'The Open Canvas' is really six books in one. Although it proceeds in order by gradually opening the canvas, each book is a completely independent unit. If you want to study any of the fields covered, you need not refer to another. Old, reliable friends such as the buttonhole, chain, or four-sided stitches are repeated as needed, so that skipping about is not necessary. Reference is made to the other books, however, so that you can see different examples if you so desire.

Each of the six books is a series of lessons that progresses along with the samplers, which are completed with the last lesson. These lessons can be formally taught, they can be a group experience, or they can be followed individually. Both pattern diagrams and stitch diagrams are provided for each stitch. Pattern diagrams are used to locate the stitches on the canvas, and descriptions of the work accompany them. Stitch diagrams actually show the technique employed; they are usually illustrated without tension, to avoid distortion. The little photographs show the stitches as they appear in the sampler, actual size. Advanced embroiderers need only study the patterns and diagrams, intermediate students can refer to the captions for additional information, and beginners will probably want to read the entire text.

Although specific numbers of elements and stitches are shown in the diagrams, the embroiderer should learn to vary them. There are limitless possibilities within each technique. These books should serve as introductions only; the rest is up to you.

The Open Canvas covers several open work embroidery techniques and is truly several books in one. The book covers pulled canvas, filet, hardanger, needleweaving, hem stitching, reticello and hedebo. Interesting projects.

This is a great book if you want to know about stitches techniques for open work like needleweaving, hemstitching, pulled canvas and the like. Specific instruction with b/w photos and well-executed drawings are given in a step by step manner.
