The Dalai Lama gave a series of talks in the US in 1999 and this book is a compilation of them. He talks about the basic beliefs of Buddhism and discusses the importance of exercising compassion towards every other being in order to achieve inner peace. He also gives advice on meditation and acquiring wisdom, all in simple language that makes it easy to understand, although the latter part of the book goes into more complicated metaphysical explanations. It's a great book to use as a simple guide to life, even if the meditation exercises make the achievement of enlightenment seem to me a daunting task.
