Summary:
Rosie and Jonathan have been together for a very long time. The two of them are comfortable, but when Jonathan gets an offer for his dream job and wants Rosie to move across the country with him, we find out that comfortable doesn't mean everything. Jonathan drops Rosie off at her grandmother, Soapie's house, while he travels on to California without her. Rosie then sets out on trying to help her grandmother who is showing signs of dementia. She wants to fire the 30 something caregiver, Tony, that lives with her, but she can't seem to do it yet. Then she finds out that she is pregnant, at 44. Over a long decision making process, she decides to keep the baby, keep the caregiver (maybe for herself), and actually learn about her grandmother more than fight with her.
My thoughts:
Dawson has done a wonderful job building characters and relationships within this novel. None of the characters are perfect. Each has their own individual flaws and aspirations. While Rosie is definitely the main character, Soapie, Tony, and Jonathan are all three dimensional beings with a back story and excellent descriptions. All of them are brought to life and I felt like I could tell their own motivations as the story continued. This tale is true to life in the fact that things are not going to be as they seem. There are decisions to be made and each one as a consequence, some of which can't be helped. I enjoyed getting to know each character and root for their happiness, whatever form that may end up being.

The Opposite of Maybe by Maddie Dawson is a quick, light summer read depicting love through a set of relationships surrounding Rosie Kelley and her family. The story proceeds exactly as I expected based on the description. It is told through one dimensional characters, but the relationships in it draw me in, making me laugh and cry.
