Jessica Therrien has a sensational first book to the Children of the Gods series!! Romantic and thrilling, Oppression pulls at the heart in more ways than one! In all of Elyse's eighty-nine years of life on Earth she's always kept secrets. Knowing she was very different for as long as she could remember, Elyse was hidden from the world, not knowing why. Her parents never got the chance to tell her before they died long before their time. When they died, Elyse began living with her second mother, Betsy. Never being allowed to love, have friends, or make any attachments at all, Elyse always had to move so no one would catch on to the fact that she ages much slower than normal people. Where she looks eighteen, she is in fact eighty-nine. Eventually being able to go to school, she does form a strong friendship with Anna and ends up telling her secrets to her and discovers some new ones! Elyse has a huge crush on William, the extremely handsome guy that works at Cearno's coffee shop. William becomes a big character in Oppression. The love of her life even. With William by her side, along with some new friends just like her, Elyse delves deeper and deeper in what you and I would call Greek Mythology 101. For Elyse, William and the gang though...it's life with some fibs thrown in. Awesome abilities, unspeakable actions, strict rules put out and enforced by the Council, beautiful friendships and exciting surprises are now part of Elyse's life! After learning Anna is sick, Elyse makes a decision that gets the ball rolling on a prophesy made around her...and it will change her and all Descendants lives! "Eighty-nine years of life was more than I could ask for, and to end it with such sweet memories of love and bliss seemed like the perfect time to go." At first I thought Oppression started off a little slow, but Therrien was just building the characters and laying down the foundation for what will ultimately be an amazing and heart thumping read! I loved Elyse! She battles within herself to save one life while sacrificing another. Incredibly brave, Elyse needs to decide to either buck against the system or just meekly go along with the injustices she witnesses just like everyone else. I loved Therrien's different take on Greek mythology. I love how she plays around with the laws of nature. I found it hard to tear myself away from this book and do my household chores! My heart was literally pounding with the climax of the story!! I just know that anyone who starts Oppression will surely have the same reaction I did! Uprising (Children if the Gods #2) by Jessica Therrien comes out February 19th 2013 and I greatly anticipate it!
