This book is after "Sight Unseen" (which I have not yet read) and is a fast paced romp through Mexico, as many parties with differing agendas search for the "Archives of Man". There are a few flaws in the plot but the story moves along fast enough so that you won't think of that until the end. The author does have a hard time keeping all the plotlines going at an even clip and headed in the right direction: I almost gave up 3/4 of the way through but did manage to finish it. The characters are mostly one dimensional however.
If you like the premise of a historian being able to see into the past, I'd like to suggest you read "Falling Woman" by Pat Murphy. It's a hard to find science fiction story about an archeologist who has such great luck in the field because she is able to see the sites and the people building them, during her digs. Pat Murphy is a wondrful author who has not written much and I do highly suggest "Falling Woman"
