A really good book!!! It covers 3 generations of a family trying to make a living in the Outback of Australia with sheep. I really enjoyed reading it. It also explained what women had to go through during those times. They really didn't have too many choices, but this book made the main female characters a lot tougher and better to overcome obstacles that got in their way. I would recommend this book.

A saga as vast and passionate as Australia itself!

Patrick Garrity started life as the bastard son of a female convict. Unwanted and unloved, he was born in shame and raised in the poverty of a Sydney orphanage. Barely out of his teens, he left the brawling city to makea new life for himself in the limitless back country of New South Wales. Alone and hungry, he met the woman who would change his destiny and that of an entire continent.

Innocent in the ways of Europeans, Mayrah was the native girl Garrity bought to satisfy his passions. Divided by competing cultures, they were nevertheless united by their fierce love of the land -- and eventually, each other. Together they carved out an enormous empire in the great outback, and founded a new generation of Australians who would forever bear the imprint of the pride and passion.

When I first started to read this book (first page)I thought it might be just to mind boggeling. The first few paragraphs were unclear to me. By end of page 2 I was thoroughly hooked. It is a story about an Aboriginal female who is brought to the son, of a criminal sent to Australia from England, as he is looking for a full time companion during his long days and nights caring for thousands of sheep. She is scared to death, she can't understand his language, and he doesn't understand anything she tries to say. Over a long period of time she learns to speak pidgon english and he learns to understand. They have children of their own, and a long history of the family unfolds in all its glory and excitement. This one of the best books I have read. And that is more than a thousand. Give it a go you'll not be disappointed.

If James Michener were writing a story about the Outback of Australia, this is the way he would write it. Rich in detail, authentic in plot, and illuminated with history, OUTBACK tells the story of the settling of Australia's wild central vastness by the cast-offs, ex-convicts, and immigrants who could endure the solitude of outback existence. The story follows an Englishman from a Sydney debtor's prison to work on sheep stations as a drover to an alliance with a strong-willed Aborigine woman who helped him build and fight for his own station in the far outback, destined to become one of the largest enterprises in the country. If you enjoy historical fiction, are intrigued by Australia, or simply like a good, well-told story, you will enjoy this Aaron Fletcher creation.
