Excerpt: CHAPTER IV THE JUDGMENT OP EDITH FIVE days after the events chronicled in the last chapter, Arthur was seated one morning at half- past ten in the dining-room, reading a book. He was, as a matter of fact, awaiting his breakfast. He yawned rather impatiently, and suddenly his father came bustling into the room from the studio. They exchanged a noise with their mouths that was their usual morning greeting if they should happen to meet. Mr. Gaffyn went to the bureau and fussed about with some papers. He was just about to depart when he suddenly said over his shoulder: '' Oh -- er -- Edith Yardley has written -- asks you down -- might perhaps go, eh ?" Arthur replied: "Oh! When?" "She says -- er -- to-morrow." "Oh, all right." Mr. Gaffyn went back to the studio, and Arthur pondered over this latest development.
