True Crime writer Wylie Lark has retreated to an isolated farmhouse in the fields of Iowa to write her next book. After many interviews and reading newspaper accounts, Wylie is writing the story of a family who was murdered twenty years ago in the house she is renting. A sudden snowstorm hits and Wylie finds herself stuck with unpassable roads and a phone not working. When she goes outside to the barn to get more firewood, she finds a small child half frozen in the snow. Taking the child inside to warm up, Wylie wonders where he came from. Who would let a small child wander around in a snowstorm?

This story is told in different timelines. There is Wylie at the farmhouse during the storm; there is what actually happened the night of the murders twenty years ago; and there is a section where a little girl and her mother are living with her abusive father. I loved going back and forth between the stories. All of them were interesting. As the story went on, the tension became palpable, and I didn't want to stop listening.

I listened to the audiobook narrated by Brittany Pressley who did a wonderful job with the characters. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes lots of twists and turns. Even though I figured out most of them, there were a couple real surprises. My rating: 4 Stars.
