He has stood pre-eminent as the dean of American landscape photographers for many years but few have known or even been aware of his important contributions to the story of the early pioneers through the medium of his art. In 1866, following service in the Union army, he found his way into the Western wilderness as an ox teamster with a covered wagon caravan bound for the Montana mines. When the day's work was done he would sit by candlelight and sketch scenes and events that had happened during the day. These, he periodically sent home to his devoted motehr who carefully preserved them.« less
