EXCELLENT western take on "Pride and Prejudice" set in Texas just after the Civil War. I highly recommend this. Great characters and a storyline that makes you think.

Have you ever gone to a movie, and there's that one scene that ruins it? What would have been a film that the whole family could see, you, as an adult, are even uncomfortable watching. 'Pemberlay Ranch' is a good example of this scenario. Towards the beginning of the book, the reader gets an front seat view of Mr. Darcy's wet dream of Beth. Way too descriptive in my opinion. I will not be letting my teenage daughters read this. And it's too bad, because the rest of the book is pretty good. I learned quite a lot about the Civil War. I thought it interesting that in Mr. Caldwell's version of P&P, Beth is the one that struggles with her pride; Mr. Darcy doesn't seem to change at all. He was just misunderstood. I would have given this book at 4 star rating - EXCEPT FOR THAT ONE SCENE.

IMO, this book would have been better if it had not gone after the Pride and Prejudice reader. The characters were not Jane's characters. This is a western romance. OK on it's own. But the added PP names and it was a distraction for me.
