Bujold again comes up with a lovely little story featuring Penric and the demon Desdemona. You'll need to have read at least the first two novellas to know what's going on (Penric's Demon and Penric and the Shaman), and ideally you'll have also read her 3 novels in the world of the 5 gods. This will be no hardship.
I really like how Bujold has worked out the mechanics of the demons, the Great Animals, the ghosts and the gods...and despite all these spirits the people are still people, with all our faults and strengths intact. Penric's kindness and thoughtfulness make a great foil for the chaos demon, even if her great age has matured her.
