Winner of Nobel Prize back in the 90's, and it was a good book but I think the prize goes to the author for creating such an unlikeable protagonist. I wanted to pistol-whip this asshole from the minute I made his puling acquaintance on page one. Worth a read just to be agitated. I wonder how much better the book would be if read in Japanese - - I'll never know. This set me on a Japanese literature whirlwind tour, definitely worth reading.
