Helen Gordon, the narrator of this novel, is the pineapple tart, "the highest form of compliment any woman can be given". Helen has four sistes, three of whom attend the same university as she. The Gordon sisters have escaped from an eccentric household in Northern Ireland and use their stay in Dublin as an opportunity for "shifting" men by the dozen. Their story is full of excitment, disaster and romance.
