Rick Bass' spare writing style is engaging and compelling in this collection of three short stories. His characters are similar to Raymond Carver's, living on the fringes of society and the geographical edges of the U.S. They strive to find meaning in their lives and to find and/or hold onto love. But they live in a world of dreams and frequently possess magical powers of strength, balance, and speed. Eventually they fall to earth like Icarus, but invariably find someone to pick them up and continue the quest. Take a step beyond our borders and read this book.
