This is a favorite book. Top 3 or 4. In Calvin Becker, our young narrator, you get a wry, honest observer of both his quirky, conservative family and the wonderful outside world filled with all the adventure and non-family things a young man would love. The book drips with honesty, humor, joy. Even when I'm not laughing at his bullseye views on the people around him, I'm often smiling and just enjoying the smooth prose of Frank Schaeffer.
