We read this book while we were out to dinner, rather than talk to each other! , December 8, 2005
Reviewer: Cyndy B "Annie's Mom" (Newark, DE USA)

Such a good read. Twenty years ago, my sister and I read this book over dinner at a local burger place. We didn't even talk, we just patiently waited for each other to finish a section so the other one could read it. We still read it when we visit each other's house. A wonderful, heartbreaking and inspirational story that is thick with character development. Love it, love it, love it!

My favorite book!, February 28, 2003
Reviewer: A reader

This is the best book I have ever read. I first read it when I was 19 years old and all the girls in my office were passing it around. I am 41 years old and have been recommending this book for years. It's a wonderful story about a family, taking place over 60 or more years. I think the characters are very developed - you feel as if you know them and identify with them. Certain parts actually make me cry no matter how many times I have read this book. Many years ago I read that there would be a sequel to Portraits but never heard about it any further. I would love a sequel, and also I think it would make a great movie. I have enjoyed all of Cynthia Freeman's books, but Portraits is outstanding.

Several years ago I was looking for a new author to read and a woman I worked with suggested Cynthia Freeman. I can't thank her enough! Portraits is my favorite of all her books. It's a long book but reads very fast. A good book for a rainy (or snowy) weekend!
