As always, McCaffrey provides a great story! Beginning of the series with Yana being all but discarded by the "company" on the icy planet, Petaybee. She has many things to learn, get her health back and it the mist of all, she finds love. Great Read!

Strang things were happening on the icy planet called Petaybee,Unauthorized genetically engineered species had been spotted.Geologic survey teams sent to locate newly detected mineral deposits were either coming up empty-or disappearing altogether. the locals weren't talking-especially not to the company bent on exploiting the planet.
Disable combat veteran Yanaba Maddock seemed to the company to be the ideal spy:the frailty that made her no further use to the mititary would be a perfect blind to allow her to get close to the
Petaybean natives.Mitaculously with her relocation to the arctic planet came a return of Yana's health and strength. The more she got to know the people of Petaybee, the more determined she became to protect her new home.

Enjoyable sci fi novel. Not on the level of the Pern novels, but a fun read.

Back of the book says: "Strange things were happening on the icy planet called Petaybee. Unauthorized genetically engineered species had been spotted. Geologic survey teams sent to locate newly detected mineral deposits were either coming up empty--or disappearing altogether. And the locals weren't talking--especially not to the company bent on exploiting the planet.

Disabled combat veteran Yanaba Maddock seemed to the company to be the ideal spy: the frailty that made her no further use to the military would be a perfect blind to allow her to get close to the Petaybean natives. But miraculouslsy, with her relocation to the arctic planet came a return of Yana's health and strenght. And the more she got to know the people of Petaybee, the more determined she became to protect her new home.

For something strange and wonderful truly was happening on Petaybee. Something worth fighting for, or even dying for--but, especially, something worth living for.

Having read mos tof Anne McCaffrey's books, this one left a little to be desired. For those of us who love Anne's books, this one falls a little short of what we have come to expect from her.

So many of the Sci-Fi books out there these days have become too "hard core" for me. This one, however, is a great story that I found was really hard to put down once I started reading it! 250 years previously, the planet Petaybe had been terraformed so that the Company could establish a colony and start mining it for it's rich minerals. Since then strange things have been happening - some scientific teams sent to the planet have been lost or killed & no one knows why or how. Major Yanaba Maddock, a disabled combat veteran was sent to the planet to infiltrate the locals and find out whatever she could. Miraculously, with her relocation she started to regain her health and strength. What happens next will keep the reader enthralled and unwilling to put the book down. I highly recommend this book to all Sci-Fi enthusiasts!

An interesting book. Standing alone it is only ok but when seen as the start of a series it seems very promising. Can't wait to read the next book and see how the story fills out.
