This was a very well written book; a little overbearing with the philosophy at times...but did have a surprise ending. This would probably fall into the depression era literature of the 19th century Russians.

Gritty and as bleak as the St Petersburg it evokes so well, this is a lovely little novel about a pair of twins whose lives are inescapably intertwined with that city. Their roots are there, and those roots, during the telling of the story, reach across a continent and an ocean to drag them there--if not literally, then figuratively.

The prose is tersely written, the details are incisive...this little novel is just a gem, with a twist at the end. Well written and to the point, I couldn't put it down.
