189 pages...What a wonderful read it was. It told how a young innocent 18-year old girl, Sarah Torrens, matured into a compassionate young woman, who was torn between devotion to her father (one of the slave merchants), or sympathy and humanity of slave abolition; her promise to her betrothed Anthony (a playboy), or Crispin, whom she truly admired and loved.

The story was unique, the writing was insightful, and the feeling was tender. There were no Almacks or Covenant Garden, instead there were very believable life and emotions of human beings. I highly recommend this book, and see if I could find another book by Ms. Renier.
