It's the fall of 1372 when Prince Edward hosts a feast at which one of his important knights dies. Master Hugh doubts that the death was natural and is charged by Prince Edward to determine the cause. He finds that the man was poisoned. Comes the dilemma. Who hates the knight enough to kill him? Many it seems. While brave in battle and a firm supporter of the prince, he is not liked by many around him. Some even hate him.

During the investigation others die, including the young man who served the poisoned wine and the knight and his wife who he serves. Why must this knight die, too? Master Hugh must somehow determine who among the many he does not know might kill. And, at one point he is pursued by a group of men with intent to halt his inquiries.

The investigation focuses on several people but none seem to have motivation to kill those who have died. And, because Master Hugh is a guest and a stranger to many, his efforts are thwarted by those he questions. For him, the motive seems elusive and the actual murderers are discovered quite by accident.
