Now this is one of those books that is deeper than it seems. Written inside the formula of Star Trek, it tries to pull the reader into the philosophical question of 'is there a need for violence in the universe?' There is some role-reversal and that 'Vulcan Command Mode' seems a little contrived to me, but then it does lend an air of alienness that has been missing from most ST. We are far too comfortable with the Vulcans, and have forgotten that they are aliens.
This book also introduces the character of Admiral Savaj. wow. A full Vulcan, an admiral of the Vulcan fleet, a philosopher, a scientist, and a major pain in Spock's backside. It falls unto him to show Spock and Kirk the true significance of their friendship and what it means for their respective races in the long run; it all sits very well with G. Roddenberry's vision of an universe where humans and others live in harmony.
