He opened one eye and looked at his clock
The alarm wasn’t set for another half hour
He’d been awake for half the night.

He wasn’t going to get back to sleep anyway
Might as well get this day started
He got up and took a long shower

He got dressed. His favorite jeans
The shirt she got him on their fourth date
He went back into the bathroom to shave

He sat on his bed to put his socks on next
He looked at the familiar picture by the bed
It was from their trip to the zoo

That day they did many things
The picture was of them playing with the farm animals
They’d also watched the monkeys and fed the fish

He remembered that day for another reason too
That day was the first day she’d told him
That day she’d said “I love you”

He looked at his clock. It was 8:17
He was going to be late for work
He ran out the door not noticing his socks didn’t match

He got very little done at work that day
What he got done wasn’t done very well
He was so preoccupied with the up coming evening

He called the restaurant to confirm the reservations
He called the restaurant three times
He changed his clothes five times

He picked her up five minutes later than planned
He was late because he forgot his surprise.
Then he forgot his keys on the dresser

They were sitting at their favorite table in Bao 111
She was eating her favorite soup and spring rolls
He couldn’t eat or he’d throw up. He knew it

He’d known for a year that she was the one
He was freaking out that she’d say no
But he had to take the chance

He closed his eyes and said a prayer
Then he got down on one knee
He pulled out the ring and took her hand
