I just recently added unpostables to my signature line so I'm new to this.  So I know that if someone orders directly from your self, they can tell you what unpostable they want.  But do you extend the offer to someone who just happens to order a book (FIFO) or someone who doesn't read the forums to check out the deals and doesn't know you are offering one?  Not sure if I should be PMing them to offer an extra book.

I don't PM people to offer an extra book, no. I list mine in my profile and put up what I have once a month in the Book Bazaar and have gotten rid of quite a few since doing it that way....I tend to look at it as an enticement for people to order from my shelf. I'm in no big rush to get rid of them, as it's only a few books. Since I have signatures turned off, I don't list them in my signature as I tend to assume that other people have them off too. LOL

But if you just want to get yours out of the house, PM's to those ordering would be a good way to do it.

I generally always have a special going or damaged books as freebies.  At times I will send a PM letting them know I have a special going if they are interested.. and if not... I say they can disregard the PM.  It's a mix.. some people are interested and order a LOT more and some just ignore the PM.  At least no one has been upset by the extra PM as far as I can see.

I don't send a PM regarding unpostables because I have heard people say that when they do this...if the member doesn't respond to the PM they aren't sure whether to go ahead and mail the original book, or wait until the PM is responded to.  I only send unpostables if the person PMs me first with a request for it.

It is up to you, nothing says you have to but if you want to clear up some space then you can.  If you do, put in the PM that they have 24 hours (or a specific day) to respond otherwise you are just sending the original book they ordered.

+1 what Lisa said.  I ended up in just that situation, waited 3 days for a PM reply, and then mailed the book off by itself.  Of course, Murphy's Law happened, and she pm'd me the same day I mailed the book.  I ended up sending it to her separately, because she seemed sincerely thankful that I offerred it to her.  Since then, I've only sent offerred freebies when someone PM's me.

I have a deal and unpostables in my signature and I don't PM people.  I have a profile and they can look at that if they want and see if I have a deal or anything.  With PMing people then you get into the waiting game. How long  do I wait for them to respond? For the most part I mail my books the next day and not everyone checks their account every day. If they respond after you've mailed then you have to pm saying it's too late.  I don't want to have to worry about that.  I post a lot of WL books and occassionally someone will PM saying they saw my profile and want a freebie. I'm AOK with that.

Thanks for everybody's input.  I kinda felt that way too.  I just wanted to make sure that I was being PC.

you are being PC....although as a side note, I don't ever read profiles to see if they have books listed but do frequent the book bazzar for deals.  If I order a book that isn't through a deal but the FIFO system, I wouldn't even think about checking to see what someone else might have to offer as a freebie
