Penn Cage is successful prosecutor from Houston (capital case and execution part of story) who returns home to physician father who has his own problems with Ray Priestley, who killed a man for him. Penns wife just died from cancer (father administered death drug). Young child daughter remains. Father had been prosecuted by Leo Marston, big man in town/state.
