Dawsey Wilkes is kidnapped by the McRae family, who you would classify as "Robin Hood" type vigilantes, rather than mere outlaws. After all, did not Robin Hood rob from the rich and give to the poor? "Outlaw" or not, who doesn't love Robin Hood?

[concerning the plot] Hooper and McRae enter a house on a whim, trying to see/steal a golden lamp. Dawsey, who lives in the house with the lamp, gets caught up in the middle of their escapade, and they take her hostage. Dawsey is of a fine upbringing whereas Hooper and McRae are a bit uncouth. Dawsey's kidnapping brings out some hidden feelings and skeletons of each family be it kidnapper or the kidnapped.

I didn't like these outlaws, at first, and neither does Dawsey, of course. But after she is taken to their home in the Carolina swamps, she is met with a surprise that changes her whole life! I, unwillingly, fell in love with this "outlaw" family, and so does Dawsey! She had never experienced the warmth and love between family members, such as she witnesses by the McRae family, who maybe lacking in material goods but are a loving, strong, supportive family.

This book is filled with surprises, twists and turns, and exciting action...a real page turner!

I like Marcia Gruver. Comedy is mixed with drama to make this a good read. Unexpected endings and great characterization make Marcia Gruver an author to look for.
