Ranjan Ghosh is an Indian film writer based in Mumbai. He is the first and only screenwriter filmmaker Aparna Sen has collaborated with so far in her illustrious career. Ghosh has made his screenwriting debut co-authoring the story and screenplay of Iti Mrinalini, a 2010 Bengali film directed by Aparna Sen.
Ranjan Ghosh has studied screenwriting at the Mumbai based film school Whistling Woods International. The screenplay of Iti Mrinalini was a professional assignment in the course syllabus. Interestingly this was the first time in Indian Screenwriting that any assigned screenplay of any Indian film institute has actually been filmed.
His first work was as a script assistant to Shyamal Sengupta on the National Film Award winning 2009 Bengali film Antaheen. He later assisted the director Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury on the shoot of the same film.
Ghosh's next assignment was Aparna Sen's Bengali venture after a decade, Iti Mrinalini. This was Ghosh's debut vehicle. Besides co-authoring Iti Mrinalini, Ghosh assisted Aparna Sen in direction and on the production design of the film. Reportedly, the entire memorabilia of the actress Mrinalini in the film has been designed and created by Ghosh, with some help from the art department.
Post Iti Mrinalini, Ghosh is lined up to script a film for Prakash Jha, who makes his debut as a producer for Bengali films. The film is rumored to be a loose adaptation of Jha's National Film Award winning 2003 Hindi film Gangaajal. The adapted story and screenplay is being penned by Ghosh. The yet untitled film is supposed to be a comment on contemporary Bengal politics with the 1980 Bhagalpur blindings as the backdrop. The film is scheduled to go on floors some time in 2011.
