Generally, when I start reading a Jodi Thomas book, I'm hooked by the bottom of the first page. This book was so slow getting started that I was about half-way finished before I really got interested in this novel. This book was a disappointment.

There are three stories woven around tiny Crossroads, Texas near Lubbock. Ms. Thomas does a great job of capturing the essence of the elderly eccentrics and the town gossips. One story is about Staten Kirkwood, a rancher with large holdings. His wife and (later) his son died; he is empty and drifting. Ms. Quinn O'Grady, best friend of Staten's wife (all three were life-long friends) has become a safe haven for Staten.

Lucas Reyes has one goal to go to college next fall. In the meantime, he attends high school and works part-time for Staten Kirkwood. An ill wind blows Yancy Grey into town; he's an ex-con trying to decide if he wants to go straight or case Crossroads for a quick heist and be on his way.

Life happens and each man is changed by his experiences. This is obviously the opening salvo in a multi-part, contemporary series about the Crossroads-Ransom Canyon area.

Once again Jodi Thomas' characters have come alive on the pages. Three stories were interwoven very well and she covered the gamut of young to elderly. Thank you.
