I love the Elm Creek Quilts series by Jennifer Chiaverini...a great premise, fun characters, and not too much romance/blah blah stuff.

Debbie Macomber's knitting series sounds similar.

How about the Beni Harper series by Earlene Fowler.  The first one is Fool's Puzzle. 

Forgot to mention Susan Wittig's herb garden series.

There are some scrapbook mysteries by Laura Child, which are similar.  If needlework is of interest, you may wish to give Monica Ferris' series a try as well!
