Classic Dashiell Hammet.

When the last honest citizen of Poisonville was murdered, the Continental Op stayed on to punish the guilty--even if that meant taking on an entire town. Red Harvest is more than a superb crime novel: it is a classic exploration of corruption and violence in the American grain. I love Dashiell Hammett's crime novels. He is a master of the noir detective crime novel and his characters are definitely unique. Hammett worked for Pinkerton Detectives and his character, The Op, is an example of that era. Dinah Brand is a 'gutsy broad' who was popular in the 1920's. I now look forward to reading The Glass Key and recommend this book to those who love noir crime novels.
This is a truly terrible read. Painful. Ridiculous. Cartoon characters. Hard to believe it wowed them back in the day.
