  Chapter 4:
Maggie finished her lunch and then headed back to the car. Before she started driving she fished out the picture of herself, Amanda , and who she presumed to be her mother. She took a good look at the woman. She was tall and had a beautiful smile. She had the same big green eyes as Amanda did. She was wearing a light green and white dress and on her right wrist was a loosely fitted charm bracelet. She looked at herself in the rear view mirror, and noticed for the first time that she bore a striking resemblance to Amanda and Kathy. It was obvious to her that Kathy was her mother; now she just needed to figure out who Amanda was.
She took another pill just to stay on the calm side, and continued driving. About an hour before she reached Manhattan, she stopped off at another gas station to fill up her gas tank and to stretch for a few moments. After she gassed up her car, she went inside and grabbed a few snacks and paid. On her way out, she noticed a little boy sitting on the sidewalk by the corner of the gas station. He looked to be about ten years old, and next to him was a big cardboard box.
She walked over to him and peered inside the box. Inside, were the most adorable puppies that Maggie had ever seen. There were four of them, and they looked like chocolate brown labs. She had never really thought much about having a pet, but now that she was on her own, she thought it was a wonderful idea. At least she wouldnt be completely alone.
She leaned down next to the boy. “ These are absolutely adorable!” He looked up at her with sorrowful eyes. “Thanks, he said; do you want to take one?”
“sure, but why do you look so sad”. She asked. “Well, said the boy; my daddy wont let me keep them. Not even one, and Im not allowed to come home until they are all gone.:
Maggie could feel the tears welling up in her eyes. “how much are they sweetie?” “they dont cost nothin', they are free. Please take one miss, then i will only have three more to get rid of.”
She took a look at all of the puppies. They were all so cute she didnt know how she would decide on only one. Until she saw a smaller one curled up in the corner of the box. That one had to have been the runt of the litter. Maggie reached over and picked it up gently. It was so soft and sweet. It looked up at her with big brown eyes and then layed its head down on her shoulder. She fell in love with it instantly.
She asked, “ is this one a boy or a girl?”
the boy chuckled as he turned the puppy over and said, “it is definetly a boy!”
she gave him a smile and said, “ okay, I will take him on one condition. You have to help me name him.” the boy smiled from ear to ear and jumped up with excitement. “really, you'll let me do that?” “Of course, then you will always remember him.”
the boy leaned against the wall, looking like he was in real deep thought, five minutes went by and then he said, “ i want his name to be keeper, that way, you will always remember to keep him!” its absolutely perfect maggie thought.
“i'll be right back”, and the little boy ran around the corner. He came back with another box, this one had in it a rumpled up blanket, a bag of dog food and a small bowl for water. “take really good care of him and dont forget to keep him forever!”
“thank you so much, and I promise to take extra special care of him and love and keep him forever. Now i have to go , so you take care of yourself and be safe, ok?”
she waved goodbye and went back to her car. She put the puppy in the box and set it in the front passenger seat. Keeper looked around for a few minutes and then curled up and went back to sleep. Maggie layed the blanket over him and continued driving.
