This story starts in Upper Canada, where a woman and her two children seek shelter because Lena, the daughter, is ill. The son, Drew, also has a broken arm. They stumble upon an empty house but know it belongs to a wealthy man, Rand Wheatley, who is away in New York City.

Meggy Campeau uses as little food, candles, and wood as possible because she knows she owes the homeowner and has little money to pay him. Unfortunately, Rand arrives before the Campeaus can leave because Lena still has a high fever. Of course, Rand is enraged by the squatters because he is widely known for liking his solitude and not liking visitors.

This plot trope is turned on its ear when the author moves the whole plot to England. She also uses some characters from the DANGEROUS SERIES. Rand is related to the Duke of Sudberry (Richard from DANGEROUS WEAKNESS) and Andrew Mallet (Georgianna's husband from DANGEROUS WORKS). There's a new cousin (to Rand), the Under-Secretary of State for War and the Colonies, Charles. The two men have an interesting backstory because Julia (a young woman loved by both men) chose Charles - and his title - over Rand many years ago. Julia was already pregnant by the time of their marriage. After the birth of a sickly child, Julia left Charles and continued to carouse with whomever she chose. Charles is devastated by the poor health of his young son.

This is not a drawing-room story of Victorian love; rather, it is a rousing adventure. Meggy, Lena, and Drew are often in danger. I thoroughly enjoyed this story.
