PAGE vii INTRODUCTION TO PART IT. 1 HOPE that such readers as may be somewhat tired of seeing a continuation of the Reprinted Glossaries v i l k l indly take into account the great value they have for zealous and. earnest students. With the present, Part, we come almost to an end of the more important of what may be called the minor Glossaries. Those who wish to work at dialects can only be thankful for the time and expense saved by such reprints as are given in the present volume. The reader will find here collected all the dialectal words contained in no less than ten volumes, since Kennetts work ed. 1818 is in two volumes, Rrittons Beauties of Wiltshire in three, and Glossary XIX. also contains words from the Monthly Magazine for 1814. The two latter have been carefully collated. I am also indebted to the same library for the use of Brittons Beauties of Wiltshire and the Monthly Magazine. Of Akermans Glossary, Spurdens East-Anglian Words, and Cullurns History of Hawsted, I possess copies of my own. Perhaps it might, after a sort but to edit them with due care requires, in my opinion, considerable experience in such work and I believe it will be found, in time, that viii INTRODUCTION TO PART IV. B. 16-22. various minute additions and corrections have been made in this volume, which are calculated to save a good deal of misapprehension on small points...« less
