A couple of questions...

When a person orders a book from me, does the club automatically let me know if that member has requestor conditions?

Has anyone on here ever requested non-smoking homes as a condition?  I have allergies, and I don't want a book that has a strong smoke odor, but then again, I don't want to discourage anyone from sending me books.

Yes and Yes. :)

I have such a condition.  It reads:

Sorry to have to list conditions - I have received quite a few books that were in poor condition.

Please - no water damage or mold.

Also, due to allergies, only books from smoke-free homes.

Second-hand books are ok as long as they don't smell like smoke to you, and you are a non-smoker. I buy many second-hand books from sales and used books stores and haven't had a problem.

Thanks for your understanding! :)

yes and yes.

If someone asks for one of your books and they have RC's it pops up in RED and says "Does your book meet these conditions?" you can't miss it.

I think the "non-smoking" is probably the most used RC.  Just make sure that you are 100% clear about your willingness to accept books.  I only say this because most of the books here are used, they come from UBS, Good Will, ex-library and other places.  So if you are only concerned about books that smell like smoke you might want a condition that says

"Please do not send this book if you are a smoker."  or  "I have allergies, so if the book has a strong odor, please don't send it."

Thank you both for the replies and suggestions!  Here's what I decided to put as my conditions...

"Due to my allergies, I cannot accept books with smoke odor or other strong smells, but I'm not allergic to books from pet-friendly homes.

Thank you!"

I decided to keep it brief.  Hopefully this will work well.  I do want to seem willing to accept books, so I hope this will inform but not discourage others from sending books.   If my conditions don't sound well-worded, suggestions are appreciated.

This was helpful. I was nervous the first time that I had a request with a condition just because it was kind of tricky. They requested no  moldy odors and wouldn't you know that the particular books wanted weren't the freshest ones that I had.

I have been a member for just a little while and have had some action. But when I came into the forums, I started wondering about the conditions more. Especially ex-library books. I had been following the rules but now I am not sure how tatty a book can be. I don't mind getting a book as long as the pages are complete and tight but what about wear to the cover, etc. How good is good?! I want to be a good PBS member.

I'd put the "not" part in capital letters - someone might easily skim right over that and think your conditions are no smoking and also no pets.  Just my two cents.

Is there a place I can add, when posting a book, if it's not in the "best condition" but still meets acceptable standards?

Deb - Unfortunately, no.  But, not to worry!  If you book meets PBS guidelines, you should feel no guilt about posting it and sending it.  All receivers should know that this is a used site, books are not expected to be in new or even like-new condition.
