The buffalo is the largest wild animal in North America. With the relentless drive west, the bison (its true name) was slaughtered almost to the point of extinction. The author captures the life of these animals through a remarkable photo-essay. The buffalo is truly a living symbol of our unique American heritage. It is also a tragic reminder of a lost era when Plains Indians shared the land with the buffalo and called it Tatonka, "next to God."
