Waddell tells us of his years growing up in the mid-20th century in a close-knit family. The story is about his relationship with his parents (fairly good), his mother's mother, who wanted to make a good Catholic of him, and with his much younger brother. It's also about his sexual exploits starting at age 12. He spends a LOT of time detailing his relationship with various girlfriends, and there is a lot of heavy language thrown in as well. Speaking of language, the book is written in a Geordie dialect so thick there's a glossary at the back of the book. Perhaps British readers would make more sense of it than I did: even with the glossary and taking things in context, I was often stumped.
