Wonderful story that tells the real difference between England and America in the 1800's
This is a book about second chances. Grayson Rhodes, a neer-do-well from Scotland, is looking for a second chance to establish himself as a success in his own and his fathers eyes.
This takes place in 1865; the Civil War has ended and Confederate men are going home to find what is left of their homes and lives.
Widow Abbie Westland has a second chance to keep her children fed by hiring men from Scotland who will help her with the back-breaking work on her farm.
Grayson and some friends have been conned into finding their fortune by being sent to cotton fields to pick cotton! A clever entrepreneur has gotten Scottish parents to pay 500 pounds to help the young men find their fortune. At the same time, he has talked dirt-poor Confederate widows into paying $300 to get able-bodied men to help them pick their cash-crop cotton.
This is an interesting insight into the difficult life widows had after the Civil War. Without the men of their families, these women struggled to survive.
There are lots of plot twists; it is an emotional story about wrestling with great difficulties against terrible odds. It is a great history lesson, told in human terms.
I loved the book!

VERY VERY GOOD!

A duke's son, Grayson Rhodes is a maverick who leaves London's suffocating upper class world to earn his own fortune. He seizes the chance to work Abbie Westland's land, determined to work the farm by day and soothe her through the nights in his strong embrace. But can their growing love survive a surprise reminder of her past that comes back to haunt them?

So he seized the chance to work Abbie Westland's land...and from the moment he first saw Abbie, he was determined to use his arms to work the farm by day and to soothe her through the nights in his strong embrace. Abbie, with her fiery determination, was different from the fragile beauties he's known at home. In her Grayson found an honest passion he'd never experienced before. But could their growing love survive the surprising reminder of her past that comes to haunt them?

A ROGUE IN TEXAS is the first in Heath's "Rogues in Texas" trilogy and a very sweet and enjoyable read. It is definitely not one of the fluffier and lighter historical romances out there, though it does have its share of funny and light moments. The romance between Abbie and Grayson is enchanting and Gray's devotion to her is undeniably compelling. I'm very much looking forward to reading Harry and Jessye's story in NEVER LOVE A COWBOY.
