Lovely American heiress Ellen Berg has just discovered that she is the owner of her ancestral English home, beautiful Stapling Manor. There's just one fly in the ointment, so to speak. . .or perhaps it's a wasp - fearsome Lady Laura, who has lived at and run Stapling [and the surrounding countryside] as though it were her very own, and who is not about to step aside for an upstart American grandniece! Lady Laura preserved and maintained the 15th Century manor house and the few remaining acres by some shady shenanigans, and she's a holy terror. Adding to Ellen's confusion is the distraction of a very attractive archaelogist who is bent on getting his way, too. Journeys end, as Shakespeare says. . .and so does Elizabeth Cadell, in this very satisfying tale.
