Carolyn Davidson, as always, wields her pen with polished grace. My problem with this novel: It is about so little. It felt more like a soap opera: Will returns home and the family adjusts to that; Josie comes home and the family gathers around her with their support, Cassie lies and eventually makes her peace with her error.

I've read the 5 star evaluations given this book and realize this novel just didn't speak to me. Perhaps I wasn't in a receptive turn of mind at the time I read the story.

Cassie's mother has just died and Cassie's stepfather has been waiting for this moment to make a move on the daughter. In a scuffle, Cassie stabs her stepfather, knowing his intentions.

Cassie has been running and finally collapses on the bank of a river. A young man accosts her while he is giving his horse a rest and some water. Will realizes he cannot leave Cassie in the wilds and takes her with him to his home.

If only given three words to describe this novel, I would call it "a gentle romance."
