I truly cannot praise this book and adventure enough. It's the account of a really remarkable turn-of-the-century adventure and full of the spirit which built America. The sailor/author has a dry sense of humor which feels very modern and current, even today. He takes his voyage both seriously and lightly, seeing humor in adversity and never wallowing in false valor. When recognized as an amazing adventurer at various ports he promptly puts on a presentable outfit & heads to a local lecture hall - making it clear in his book that it isn't for praise, it's to make enough money to continue the journey! I'd recommend reading a brief bit about Slocum to start, because the intro is tedious and much more interesting to the reader after getting a feel for what Slocum actually did and his attitudes. This one made my top-10 adventure books of all times!

Very interesting story of Captain Joshua Slocum's solo voyage circumnavigating the earth from 1895-1898. I learned a bit about sailing, a lot about people in various ports and islands, and something about Slocum himself. What ingenuity, courage, and tenacity he had, but Slocum is almost nonchalant about his feat. The terminology is quaint and unfamiliar, as it is a first-hand account, but it was a charming read.
